Whether on the field of hockey, at a charity event, or somewhere in Brantford, Ontario, many Canadians miss the memories and stories of meeting Walter Gretzky. Mark Messier is no exception.
The six-time Stanley Cup champion met the Walter and Gretzky families while playing with Edmonton Oilers’ Wayne Gretzky in the 1980s. Walter, known as Canada’s beloved hockey dad, passed away at the age of 82 on Thursday.
For Messier, Walter is everyone’s good friend.
«Walter always had a way of making you feel good about yourself,» Messier told Arash Madani and Stephen Brunt on Friday’s edition of Sportsnet Today. «Even after we’d be down on ourselves after a tough loss, he had a nice way of keeping things in perspective. He’d always turn the page and [be] looking forward to the next game.»
Messier said that Edmonton attaches great importance to family, not only teammates have become good friends, but the parents of the players have also established relationships with each other.
Messier said that Wayne and Walter had a «beautiful relationship» and pointed out that Walter and his wife Phyllis Grezki together made him a great man today.
Messier said: «Walter and Phyllis did a great job keeping Wayne grounded, protecting him when needed, and exposing him when needed.»
«But I think Walter and Phyllis passed on to Wayne’s life. The course has shined in his career. Wayne has time to accompany everyone.»
Like many other Canadian families, Messier said that the Gretzky family work hard and have been working hard to become good citizens.
«They did not ignore the fact that the most important thing is to maintain integrity, honesty and honesty.
I think these are the characteristics of Canadians. We can all realize among the great people that Wayne is so because of his parents.»
Wayne (Wayne) achieved great success in the NHL, Walter (Walter) quickly became a public figure and his own Canadian icon.
Considering his celebrity status in his life, Messier said that Walter was «shy» when he first met him, and that Walter tried not to attract people’s attention. Messier said: «Later it became obvious that he himself became a celebrity. He was on the podium, on charity matches, watching youth hockey matches, and was invited to the competition.
I think he really liked it after a while. . «I think he actually does feel obligated to give back.
He understands the seriousness of the situation and can help young boys and girls.»
