Forced labor reported in Malaysian electronics factories

Nearly a third of the estimated 350,000 employees in Malaysia’s electronics industry suffer from conditions similar to modern slavery, according to a study funded by the US Department of Labor.

Research by Verite, an international workers’ rights group, found that at least 28% of the electronics factory workforce, especially immigrants from neighboring poor countries, were in a spiral of forced servitude.

Several multinationals from the United States, Europe, Japan and South Korea are present in Malaysia, including Samsung, Sony, Inter and Bosch.

The US government, which supports the report, bans the importation of items made with forced labor.
